WHERE DESIGN BECOMES FURNITUREEvery piece of custom furniture begins long before it arrives in a home.It begins here.At the bench.With timber laid out, measurements checked, lines marked and decisions being made — sometimes by the millimetre.A drawing may describe what we intend to make, but the workshop is where that idea becomes real. Where design meets material, and where experience becomes particularly important.Timber has character. Grain changes. Colour varies. Individual boards behave differently. What looks beautifully simple in a finished piece can involve countless decisions about how the material is selected, positioned, joined and worked.And those decisions matter.For us, custom furniture has never simply meant changing the dimensions of an existing design.It means understanding why the piece needs to exist.How will the room be used? What needs to be stored? How should people move around it? What proportions will make the space feel balanced? And how can we resolve all of those practical requirements without losing the simplicity of the design?That’s where more than three decades of furniture making becomes part of the process.When the finished piece is finally installed, you shouldn’t have to think about the joints, tolerances, grain direction or countless measurements that came before it.You should simply feel that the furniture belongs.The proportions feel right.
The storage works.
The material feels good beneath your hand.
And the piece settles naturally into the architecture of the room.That’s what these three photographs from our workshop have really been about.The hand.
The knowledge.
The making.Traditional skills working alongside contemporary design and modern technology.Because while the way we design and make furniture continues to evolve, some things haven’t changed.Good furniture still requires patience, judgement and an understanding of material.And ultimately, someone has to stand at the bench and care about getting it right.Because we’re not simply making something to fill a space.We’re making something that will become part of the way you live.

MEASURED IN MILLIMETRES. JUDGED BY EXPERIENCE.A millimetre can make a difference.But knowing where that millimetre matters comes from experience.When we design and make custom furniture, precision is part of the process from the very beginning. Dimensions are considered, proportions refined and every component has a relationship with the next.But furniture making has never been about measurements alone.A ruler can tell you the length.A square can give you the angle.A marking gauge can give you the line.A chisel can shape the joint.But none of them can tell you whether the piece feels right.That comes from understanding proportion, material and construction — and from years spent designing and making furniture.The joint in this photograph is a good example.Before a finished piece ever reaches someone’s home, there are countless decisions like this hidden within it. How components meet. How loads are carried. How strong something needs to be. How cleanly it can be resolved. And importantly, how all of that construction can disappear into the simplicity of the finished design.Because good craftsmanship isn’t necessarily something you should immediately notice.Sometimes its greatest achievement is that you don’t notice it at all.You simply see a beautifully resolved piece of furniture that looks effortless in the room, works exactly as it should and feels as though it was always meant to be there.That’s the difference between furniture that simply fits a space and custom furniture that has been designed for it.Designed with precision.
