Master Craftsman

From a young age, I was captivated by the arts and design. This lifelong passion led me to pursue furniture design as a natural extension of my creative drive. After years of exploring, I began an apprenticeship as a chair and couch maker, mentored by master European craftsmen who instilled in me an exceptional level of skill and precision.

I was honored with the most outstanding awards in both my trade and craftsmanship, and those early achievements set me on a trajectory I never expected. After more than 30 years in the industry, I expanded into furniture design, honing a minimalist approach that balances form, strength, and subtlety. To deepen my vision, I also earned a diploma in interior design, which lets me craft spaces where furniture and environment work seamlessly together.

Colin Whitehead is a qualified furniture maker and interior designer. He is the creative force behind his company Special Things Furniture, which has specialised in creating quality custom made furniture for over three decades.

His exceptional abilities have seen him win several accolades for being the most outstanding in his trade of chair and couch making and also craftsmanship. His furniture items have also won several prestigious awards.

Our Design & Creation Process

Meet & Discuss

Based in Melbourne, we will come to you. We will discuss your requirements in order to fully understand your project. We will also make suggestions based on our experience and past projects.

Concept & Costs

We will formally provide our design solutions, finishes and pricing options for comment, review and approval.

Design & Build

We will finalise the design ready for our craftsment to start work on your unique piece of furniture.

Complete & Install

After your piece has been completed it will be quality checked to ensure its just right. We will then arrange delivery and installation into your home or office.
