The Split Entertainment Unit is defined by its unusual yet practical construction. Two separate elements — a low platform and a raised timber cabinet — overlap to create a balanced, architectural form.
Unlike conventional entertainment units, the two sections are not permanently connected. This allows the overall length to be adjusted or the pieces to be arranged into a corner configuration, offering greater flexibility in furniture placement.
The raised cabinet features a full-length fold-down front with soft-opening and soft-closing hardware, revealing three internal storage compartments. Integrated cable management and rear ventilation provide practical accommodation for entertainment equipment.
Designed to complement both contemporary and established interiors, Split can support a television directly on the cabinet or sit beneath a wall-mounted screen.
The combination of natural timber and two-pack lacquer creates a striking contrast, while all-timber and single-colour finishes offer alternative interpretations of the design.
A separate freestanding version is also available, retaining the distinctive U-shaped timber form without the extended lower platform.
First designed in Melbourne in 2005, the Split Entertainment Unit began with a simple idea — furniture should adapt to the space and the way people live.
Originally created for a compact home in St Kilda West, the design needed to offer flexibility without compromising its appearance.
The solution was to separate the entertainment unit into two independent elements, allowing them to overlap along a wall or be repositioned into a corner.
Over the years, subtle refinements have been made to its proportions and detailing, while the original design concept has remained unchanged.
More than twenty years later, Split continues to demonstrate how considered furniture design can remain relevant as homes, technology and lifestyles evolve.
We are planning a separate reference page showing the standard timber and two-pack lacquer finishes available across the Special Things Furniture collection.
Once created, this page should be linked from the relevant shop pages.
For now, please keep the product selection simple, with the two timber choices and standard sizes.
Customers requiring alternative colours, custom finishes or drawer configurations can contact Special Things Furniture directly.
