The Symbiont Collection was designed by Formacy Design Bureau in 2020 as a flexible system of interconnected tables that blur the line between furniture and sculpture.

Designed by Manuel Canestrini and Colin Whitehead, the collection explores the relationship between individual forms and how they interact together within a living space. Originally conceived as a fully dependent modular system, each element connected and relied upon the next — creating a sculptural arrangement that could evolve and adapt over time.

The collection has since evolved into a refined series of freestanding yet interconnected pieces, allowing the tables to function individually or gather together as layered compositions. Coffee tables, side tables and occasional pieces can be combined in varying heights and diameters, creating a flexible arrangement that shifts effortlessly with the space around it.

The signature node detail and optional handle element introduce a subtle architectural language throughout the collection — adding rhythm, structure and individuality without overpowering the purity of the forms.

Crafted in solid timber and available in curated finishes including natural oak, ebonised oak and selected colour editions, Symbiont balances warmth, playfulness and restraint. The collection can remain calm and minimal in monochromatic tones or become more expressive through carefully considered colour pairings inspired by contemporary and retro influences.

The Symbiont Collection was recognised with multiple design accolades including:

  • Vivid Design Award — Colour Category Winner
  • IDEA Awards — Highly Commended
  • Good Design Award Winner

Designed to adapt, gather, separate and reconnect, Symbiont creates an evolving sculptural landscape for contemporary living.
