The Table Is Where Life Happens

Some of life’s most memorable moments happen around a table.

It may be a quiet breakfast before the day begins, a coffee enjoyed alone, dinner shared with family, or the anticipation of friends arriving for an evening together.

Whether the setting is casual or formal, the act of preparing the table helps create the atmosphere for what follows. It signals care, welcomes people into the moment, and gives even an everyday meal a sense of occasion.

A beautifully considered table setting does not need to feel elaborate. Often, it is the quieter details that make the greatest difference—the texture beneath a plate, the balance of colour, the shape of an object and the way each element sits comfortably within the room.

At Special Things Furniture, we believe the objects we choose to live with do more than fill our homes. They quietly shape how we experience them.

That belief became the starting point for the Felt & Form Collection.

Where the Journey Began

The Felt & Form Collection began with a simple question:

How could an everyday object such as a placemat become a more considered part of the dining experience?

Rather than treating placemats as purely practical accessories, we approached them with the same attention to proportion, material and form that informs our furniture and mirror collections.

The original collection was created using premium wool felt, selected for its warmth, softness and beautifully tactile character.

Our designer wool felt placemats were developed to protect the table while also contributing to the atmosphere of the room. The felt softens harder surfaces, introduces gentle texture and brings a calm, understated presence to contemporary interiors.

It also offers practical benefits for everyday dining, helping to protect furniture from scratches, heat and general wear while reducing the sound of plates, glassware and cutlery against the table.

The result is an object that works quietly in the background.

It does not compete with the meal, the tableware or the people gathered around it. Instead, it creates a foundation that helps the entire setting feel more balanced and complete.

A Collection Shaped by Geometry

From the beginning, geometry has played an important role in the Felt & Form Collection.

Each design was developed with its own visual identity:

Facet explores angular geometry and crisp, sculptural lines.

Orbit introduces a balanced circular form.

Arc offers a softer, elongated shape with gently curved edges.

These designs were never intended to belong to only one product or one material.

Instead, each form became part of a broader design language—one that could continue to evolve across different objects, functions and materials over time.

This is similar to the way our furniture collections develop. A design retains its identity even as its dimensions, use or material expression changes.

Facet is therefore more than the name of a placemat.

It is a design idea.

From Felt to Form

As the Felt & Form Collection evolved, so did the opportunity to explore the Facet geometry in a completely different material.

The new Facet Form Collection introduces the original design in a premium furniture-grade two-pack lacquer finish.

Where wool felt feels soft, warm and tactile, lacquer brings clarity, precision and a more architectural presence.

The smooth surface and refined colour allow the angular form to become more pronounced, creating a placemat that feels crisp, contemporary and quietly sculptural.

Developed for dining tables, breakfast bars, kitchen islands and other places where people gather to eat, the Facet Form placemat helps frame each setting and bring visual order to the table.

It is practical enough for everyday use, yet considered enough to help elevate a special occasion.

The introduction of lacquer does not replace the original wool felt collection.

It expands it.

One Design Philosophy. Two Material Expressions.

The felt and lacquer collections offer two distinct experiences while remaining connected by the same underlying design philosophy.

Our designer felt placemats bring softness, warmth and texture to the table. They work beautifully with timber, natural stone and interiors where a more tactile, understated character is desired.

The Facet Form lacquer placemats offer a sharper and more defined expression. Their smooth two-pack finish introduces colour and precision while complementing contemporary furniture and modern interior spaces.

One material absorbs and softens.

The other reflects and defines.

Both are created to protect the table, frame the place setting and contribute to the atmosphere of dining.

This gives homeowners, interior designers and architects the freedom to select the material that best suits the character of a space without losing the consistency of the original design language.

Different materials.

Different moods.

One collection.

Designed for Everyday Rituals

Good design is not reserved for formal occasions.

It has just as much value during the quieter parts of daily life.

A placemat may sit beneath breakfast before work, a relaxed weekend lunch, a family dinner at the end of the day or a carefully prepared setting for guests.

In each of these moments, it becomes part of the ritual.

It defines the individual place setting, creates a sense of order and helps transform an ordinary surface into a welcoming place to sit, eat and connect.

That is why we see these pieces as more than table protection.

They are small architectural elements within the home—objects that bring beauty and purpose into familiar routines without overwhelming them.

The best design often works this way.

It does not demand attention.

It simply helps everything around it feel more considered.

Made With the Same Attention as Our Furniture

Although smaller in scale, the Facet Form Collection is approached with the same commitment to detail that guides our furniture.

Each placemat begins with precision-machined material before being carefully prepared, sanded and finished in multiple layers of premium furniture-grade two-pack lacquer.

The result is a smooth, durable surface that highlights the distinctive Facet geometry and gives the piece a refined, contemporary character.

The collection is designed and made in Melbourne, continuing our commitment to considered Australian design and local craftsmanship.

The current colour, Dulux Leaf Green, was selected for its depth, calm character and ability to sit comfortably alongside timber, stone, neutral tableware and natural materials.

It is a colour that feels distinctive without becoming overpowering—bringing personality to the table while allowing the overall setting to remain balanced.

A Collection That Continues to Evolve

Facet Form represents the next chapter rather than the final destination.

Over time, the Felt & Form Collection will continue to expand beyond placemats into a wider family of contemporary lifestyle objects.

Future pieces may include timber serving trays combined with felt, coasters, table runners, desk accessories, serving pieces and other objects for the home.

The Facet, Orbit and Arc geometries can move naturally through these different applications while retaining their individual identities.

This allows the collection to grow in a considered way.

Rather than producing unrelated accessories, each new object can become part of a recognisable design system connected through form, material and craftsmanship.

The materials may change.

The function may evolve.

The design idea remains.

Designed for the Moments That Matter

Ultimately, Felt & Form is not simply about placemats.

It is about the atmosphere we create around the table.

It is about the quiet moment in the morning, the familiar rhythm of a family meal and the anticipation of welcoming friends into the home.

It is about recognising that the smallest objects can influence how a space feels and how a moment is experienced.

Our wool felt and lacquer placemats each offer a different expression of that idea.

One brings warmth and softness.

The other introduces precision and clarity.

Together, they reflect our belief that great design is not defined by a single material.

It is defined by an idea that continues to evolve.
